THE PHILOSOPHY OF NON-PLACES BY MARC AUGÉ IS EXPLORED WITHIN A MIXED REALITY. THE VIRTUAL SPACE BECOMES A NONPLACE OF ITS OWN AND ENCOURAGES THE VIEWER TO QUESTION THE SENSE OF VIRTUAL SPACES.
A NON-PLACE IS A TRANSITORY SPACE INBETWEEN DEFINED AREAS. MARC AUGE DESCRIBES AIRPORTS, TRAIN STATIONS, SHOPPING MALLS, HOTELS AND EVEN VIRTUAL SPACES AS NON-PLACES. THESE SPACES ARE ANONYMOUS, UNIFORM AND PRIMARILY SERVE THE PURPOSE OF TRANSIT, CONSUMPTION OR EFFICIENCY. THEY ARE OFTEN STANDARDIZED AND OFFER SIMILAR EXPERIENCES REGARDLESS OF THEIR GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION.


VR TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS A NEW IMMERSIVE FORM OF AESTHETIC EXPERIENCE. A CONNECTION BETWEEN EXPERIENCING DIGITAL VIRTUALITY AND THE ABSTRACT CONCEPTS OF NON-PLACES BY MARC AUGE BECOMES VISIBLE.
